Pantelleria is an island off the Southwestern coast of Sicily, but actually closer to Tunisia than to Sicily, let alone the mainland of Italy. EVerything about this place is unique, from the unusual houses, called "damusi," covered with black lava rocks and topped with white roofs with separate domes for each internal room, to the steep, terraced vineyards, home to the Moscato di Allessandria grape, a large, yellow-skinned Muscat variety that is made on the island into one of the most exquisite wines in the world, the Passito di Pantelleria.

D'Ancona, the oldest winery on the island, has been taken in hand by the younger generation, and as is the story being repeated over and over again with our suppliers, the younger generation is both respecting the family traditions and making a name for themselves in their own right. But don't think they can do it alone - one of the reasons this wine is so spectacularly pure and elegant is the laborious work performed by mama and her circle of friends: after the grapes are dried sufficiently to turn into large raisins, everyone gathers around a big table and, over hours of pleasant talk and gossip and friendship, destems every one of these raisins by hand. There is no other way to get the results you will taste and appreciate in one glass of this remarkable wine.
